Lands of rice, wine and culture

A 7-day itinerary to discover the Piedmontese rice lands, the "Baragge", between Biellese, Vercellese and Novarese.

Lands of organic cultivations, excellent wines, and extraordinary estates, operating in historic homes and castles that dominate vast areas of this characteristic landscape.

There will be no shortage of nature excursions, tastings and curiosities!


PROGRAMME
7 days/6 nights



1st DAY

Arrival in Livorno Ferraris for a visit to the Museo delle Mondine, located inside the Tenuta Colombara, to discover the intimate and daily life of these tireless rice labourers, the first example of seasonal workers, thanks to whom, following strong tensions, the official working time of 8 hours was then decreed.

The visit to the Museum will make us relive the scenes of the 1949 film Bitter Rice which, starring the unforgettable actress Silvana Mangano, received a nomination for the 1951 Oscar Awards for best screenplay in 1951.

It will also be possible to visit the estate, home to the production of the renowned Acquerello Rice, with its particular tin packaging, and chosen by Slow Food as a separate teaching site for the University of Gastronomic Sciences of Pollenzo.

At the end, continuation of the journey towards Trino Vercellese, at the foot of the Principality of Lucedio for dinner and overnight stay in the hotel.

2nd DAY

Breakfast at the hotel.

Check-out and departure for Lucedio to visit the Principality and its Abbey founded by the Cistercian monks in 1123 who introduced the cultivation of rice to Italy. 

At the end, continuation of the journey towards Vercelli, known both as the Italian and European capital of rice, and as a stop on the Via Francigena.

Free lunch.

In the afternoon, visit the Basilica of Sant'Andea, the first Gothic basilica in Piedmont; subsequently, time available for a free visit to the city.

Dinner in a typical restaurant to taste Panissa, a typical Piedmontese first course based on rice and red beans, symbol of the city of Vercelli.

Overnight stay in hotel.


3rd DAY

Breakfast at the hotel.

Check-out and departure for Rovasenda, a municipality surrounded by rice fields and located in the Baraggia area of ​​Vercelli which, with the provinces of Biella and Novara, represents the last Savannah in Europe.

Characteristics of Rovasenda are the double Castle and the double FFSS station.

Visit to the Ancient Castle of Rovasenda and its New Castle in the company of a guide expert in medieval archaeology.

Visit to the work/sculpture of the artist Ruben Bertoldo, artist and craftsman in metalworking, who makes his public and commissioned installations unique.

At the end of the visit, continuation to Buronzo for a light lunch inside the castle courtyard.

Afternoon dedicated to visiting an important rice company, totally organic, family-run for three generations, with the possibility of purchasing products they produce.

Continue to Biella, the capital city at the foot of the Biella Alps, known for its important industries of fine fabrics, known throughout the world.

Dinner in a recommended restaurant

Overnight stay in hotel.


4th DAY

Breakfast at the hotel.

Departure for the guided tour of Borgo del Piazzo, cradle of Biella, located in the upper part of the city, with its medieval soul and its important historic buildings: Palazzo Ferrero, La Marmora and Gromo Losa.

Lunch in restaurant.

Afternoon dedicated to visiting the Pistoletto/Cittadellarte Foundation; a new model of artistic and cultural institution founded in 1998 in Biella by Maestro Michelangelo Pistoletto.

The afternoon continues with a visit to the FILA Museum and the MEBO Museum, Birra Menabrea and Botalla Formaggi, the first business museum that brings together two companies/two families that collaborate on an entrepreneurial level whose relationships are based primarily on a long-standing friendship.

Dinner at the renowned Menabrea Brewery, housed within the ancient walls of the brewery.

Overnight stay in hotel.


5th DAY

Breakfast at the hotel.

Departure for Candelo, on the border of the Baraggia area of ​​Biella, and visit to its Medieval Ricetto, counted among the most beautiful villages in Italy. Thanks to the fact that it has never been inhabited but used as a storage/pantry for periods of famine, its medieval buildings dating back to the year 988 remain intact.

Free lunch.

Continue to Vigliano Biellese, to visit the neo-Gothic style Montecavallo Castle.  The property, heir to the Avogadro family, lives in the castle and takes care of the surrounding vineyards of Nebbiolo grapes, whose wines are very prized.

Tasting of wines and local products.

Return to Biella for free dinner and overnight stay in the hotel.


6th DAY

Breakfast at the hotel.

Departure for Romagnano Sesia, a municipality in the Baraggia area of ​​Novara, and meeting with the Environmental Hiking Guide for a walk in the Baraggia del Piano Rosa. At the end, transfer to the Ioppa winery, for a visit to the cellar and light lunch with product tasting in the company of the owner.

Afterwards, transfer to Castellengo for a visit of the village by the property. The Castle, surrounded by greenery, was built in the 10th century, and today constitutes an extraordinary historic residence with an adjoining cellar. Followed by a tasting of local wines.

Return to Candelo to the farmhouse for a dinner with typical products of the Baraggia Candelo area.


Overnight stay in a farmhouse.


7th DAY

Breakfast at the farmhouse.

Meeting with the environmental hiking guide for a walk in the characteristic Baraggia of Candelo, defined as the "last savannah of Europe" due to the flora that characterizes the landscape.

Lunch in Baraggia with packet lunches prepared by the farm.

In the afternoon, departure for return.
